KUMONS

At Kumon, our aim is for each and every child to become an independent, advanced learner, with a positive attitude to study. By studying the maths and English programmes, our students develop independent learning skills and increased self-confidence as they work out how to overcome challenges by themselves. Through our unique method, children are supported to reach an advanced level of study. By studying beyond the international standard for their age, children are best prepared to succeed in an increasingly global community. In addition to developing academic ability, Kumon study fosters in students the mind-set and skills for self-learning. Kumon is an independent study programme, but students are never alone. Our Instructors provide the guidance students need to take learning into their own hands, increasing their motivation to succeed and achieve.

At Kumon, we have a desire to create a generation of confident, independent learners who take pride in their studies. Our approach to learning is therefore different to traditional methods of supplementary education. We develop children through the acquisition of independent learning skills, rather than teaching in the conventional sense. With both the English and the maths programmes, Kumon's small-step worksheets enable all students to advance at their own pace. Kumon worksheets enable students to advance through self-learning. We will demonstrate how this is accomplished by using the maths worksheets as an example. From preschool level material to high school level maths the Kumon programme consists of 4,420 worksheets. Our small-step worksheets enable students to advance steadily on their own. Kumon worksheets increase marginally in difficulty from worksheet to worksheet so that each student can advance from easy to difficult worksheets independently. Every child is different, and so their programme of study should be too. Our individualised programmes enable students to progress to an advanced level, at their own pace, so they can realise their potential and experience success. Kumon is learning for the long run: if you want your child to be best prepared to succeed both at school and beyond, daily Kumon study can make all the difference.

ENGLISH PROGRAM

The Kumon English Programme aims to develop each student's ability to read and understand a variety of texts, and to nurture a life-long habit of reading for education and enjoyment. Each student starts at their own, individually set, starting point which will be established during their free assessment. They will begin at a comfortable level, allowing us to focus on developing a strong foundation in the way they study, paying attention to pace, concentration and rhythm. Kumon worksheets are designed with examples and instructions to support students in becoming independent learners. The English programme progresses from basic word and sentence building and culminates in critiquing advanced texts. Through daily study of this programme, students develop a wide range of reading comprehension skills, ultimately enabling them to interpret information in advanced literature and become proficient readers. They build upon strongly formed foundations to develop reasoning, interpretation, deduction and persuasion abilities.

MATHS PROGRAM

The Kumon Maths Programme progresses from the very basics of counting to calculus and beyond, all without the use of a calculator. Each student will begin at a comfortable level for them. Their individual starting point, along with their expected projection rate, is established at a free assessment. Once a firm foundation and good study skills have been developed, students move on to unfamiliar, more challenging work as they grow their independent learning skills. Through daily study of this worksheet-based programme, students develop an affinity for mental maths and the confidence to apply a range of skills when faced with a new challenge. Each level of the maths programme builds incrementally on the skills developed in the previous level, ensuring a solid understanding and the ability to put learning into practice. At Kumon we place great importance on children understanding how a calculation works and therefore their ability to select the most efficient approach to solve a problem. This is achieved through individualised instruction and the use of traditional methods, enabling students to develop their mental agility and maximise their ability. Additionally, we offer worksheets with colourful pictures to help early learners develop pencil control skills.
